In Mortal Kombat, MMA fighter Cole Young, who is used to hitting money, is not aware of his legacy – or why Outworld’s emperor Shang Tsung sent his best fighter, Sub-Zero, another world Cryomancer, to hunt Cole . Fearing for the safety of his family, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the behest of Jax, a special forces who carries the same strange dragon with which Cole was born. Soon he finds himself in the temple of Lord Raiden, an ancient God and protector of Earthrealm, who sanctifies those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand alongside the Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana – the immense power within his soul – to not only save his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Two Mortal Kombat films have been made before. The first, simply titled Mortal Kombat, was directed by Paul WS Anderson and was released in 1995. This was followed two years later by a sequel, Destruction, which also paved the way for two television series: the animated Defenders of the Empire and the live action Conquest. Two web series based on the property of director Kevin Tancharoen have also been released.

Mortal Kombat is available simultaneously in theaters on April 16 and HBO Max!
