First Google Pixel 5a leaks [Gallery]

Google’s next phone is not a “Pixel 5a”, and leaked versions today suggest that the midfielder will be almost identical to the Pixel 4a 5G.

OnLeaks (Steve Hemmerstoffer) on Voice today gives version of what is called the ‘Pixel 5a’. The dimensions (156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8 mm) are almost identical to the Pixel 4a 5G, although it is 2.3 mm longer, 0.8 mm narrower and 0.6 mm thicker. It is said that a ‘rear body (unibody (probably made of plastic)) is used, with the Pixel 3a and 4a both opting for plastic rather than glass. The only notable difference seems to be a corrugated power button design.

Despite body adjustments, it also has a 6.2-inch OLED FHD + screen with a thicker bottom that breaks the uniformity of the other three sides. There’s still a hole-in-front camera in the upper left corner.

The camera system is a notable improvement over the Pixel 4a by jumping to a dual lens setup, but – again – it’s said to be ‘the same configuration as seen on the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5’ (12 , 2 MP dual pixel and 16 MP ultra wide). Other shared specifications like an a-cell phone include the 3.5mm headphone jack and the Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor on the back. There are two recesses for a speaker and microphone that surround the USB-C port.

This ‘Pixel 5a’, if it is ultimately the final marketing / launch name, will have an incredibly light design. Such an approach would theoretically help reduce Google’s production costs, with the overarching goal of creating an affordable access device.

Today’s leak offers no specifications or insight into which processor Google will use to power the Pixel 5a, though 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage are a safe bet. A big question is whether this device will have 5G connectivity, given the huge pressure in 2020.

As for the launch, the first half of this year is a safe bet, as last year’s phone – apart from the pandemic and production outages – was likely to be announced in May, just like the 2019 Pixel 3a.
