First call: Chase Claypool repeats Browns’ criticism; Zach Banner may be back. Matt Canada and Miami?

For Friday’s “First Call,” the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Chase Claypool receiver could not get out of his own way. The Steelers may have to fight to keep Matt Canada on staff. And Zach Banner’s approach looks optimistic about his future in Pittsburgh.

All this and some college basketball news too.

Double

Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool doubles his criticism of the Cleveland Browns.

Browns players fired back at Claypool after saying the Browns would be “slapped” by Kansas City this weekend. Even after the Browns “slapped” the Steelers 48-37 on Sunday.

Despite being called out by the locker room in Cleveland, Claypool went on DAZN Canada and justified his statements.

“I think if the Browns had won by more class, I would not have been so salty about it, but they joked during the game with JuJu and after the game it just did not sit with me,” Claypool said. “They were just super classless, against JuJu, against JuJu, which they said at the end of the game on the field. I’m not going to have respect for a team that does not have respect for us. ”

He was not finished.

“They can enjoy the win and another week of football, but they’ll be on my bench next week, so that’s fine.”

Yup! There’s the kicker. Here. See for yourself.

This interview was posted on Wednesday. But Claypool calls it ‘old’. Although this was of course done after his original comments Monday and the subsequent responses from the Browns. So how “old” can it be?

And now he congratulates Cleveland.

I’m not sure what they call in Canada, Chase. But it strikes me that you’re trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube, right?

Banner back?

At least one pending Steelers free agent enters the open market with optimism about his future in Pittsburgh.

That seems to be the case based on this tweet from Steelers tackle Zach Banner.

Banner won the starting position for the right attack after a training camp fight with Chuks Okorafor. But Banner suffered an ACL injury against the New York Giants in Week 1. This kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

Banner also took the time to thank retiring coach James Daniel.

Daniel, 67, joined the Steelers in 2004. Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher has hired him. Mike Tomlin kept him on the staff when he became head coach in 2007.

Canada and Florida?

Many people wonder if Matt Canada’s coach Matt Canada will replace the apostate coordinator Randy Fichtner.

If that’s going to happen, there could be a bidding war with the Miami Dolphins first. ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe reports that Canada is a candidate to become the new offensive coordinator at the Dolphins.

If I’m Canada, I’ll take the Dolphins job if the salaries are even. The Steelers are a team that is deteriorating. The Dolphins are a team on the rise. Many of his wrong directions and movement schemes can be passed on more to a young quarterback recently removed from the University of Tua Tagovailoa than to an older, established businessman like Ben Roethlisberger.

And although Roethlisberger never had very personal statistics about Canada – just like Todd Haley – he was not exactly interested in adopting many of Canada’s philosophies.

You saw a lot of Canada’s attacking influence early in the season. But it is fading fast.

Staying under the current situation in Pittsburgh is a fool’s errand for Canada. He would be nothing more than a bridge between Fichtner and Roethlisberger’s retirement after 2021.

And if the Steelers crash – which I expect – Canada could be a one-time pitcher in Pittsburgh, perhaps with Tomlin out the door in 2021 as well.

Take the Miami job if you can get it, Matt. Better fit. Better weather. Better future.

On the move

According to Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News, the Atlantic 10 tournament will not be held in Brooklyn as planned.

Many who follow Duquesne immediately wondered if the venue could be relocated to Pittsburgh. Maybe at the new UPMC Chuck Cooper Field House if it’s finished on time? Dalk PPG Paints Arena?

Do not hold your breath. Since Pennsylvania is generally as disgusting of entertaining events in 19-year-old times as New York, such a move would make little political sense. Even if the virus contains better and the vaccine is widely distributed by that time.

On top of that, Duquesne might not want to host an important event like the one in his new building if he could not work out the twists and turns in the facility even for a full season of Dukes basketball.

However, there is a hole in PPG Paints Arena, at least according to the Penguins schedule. The pens are on their way this weekend. They’re in Buffalo. Their last home game before the tournament is Tuesday, March 9 against the New York Rangers. And the next one is only scheduled for Monday, March 15 against the Boston Bruins.

But I’m still betting on UD Arena in Dayton.
