Finally: The Andaz Bali is now open

After about five years of delay, the Andaz Bali finally opened today.

Details of the new Andaz Bali

The Andaz Bali is now open, and it is the first Andaz property in Indonesia, and the first Andaz resort in all of Asia. For those under Andaz who are unfamiliar, this is Hyatt’s luxury brand, with about two dozen properties around the world.

Here are some basic details of the Andaz Bali:

  • The hotel is located in Sanur, along the southeast coast of Bali; it may be about 25 minutes drive from Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), but traffic can be terrible at times
  • The hotel is located right next to the Hyatt Regency, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment
  • The hotel has 149 guest rooms, including 22 villas
  • I appreciate how spacious the rooms are here – standard rooms are 710 square feet, while standard suites are 1345 square feet (although I think that includes outdoor space)
  • The hotel offers facilities such as four intertwined restaurants on the town square, a beach restaurant and three swimming pools, including an infinity pool on the beach.
  • Interestingly, the hotel does not have its own spa, but rather shares the Shankha Spa in the adjoining Hyatt Regency, which also houses the fitness center, sauna, steam room, hot and cold pools, yoga spaces and adults only

Below are some photos of the Andaz Bali.

The Andaz Bali is a Category 4 World of Hyatt hotel

The Andaz Bali debuts as a Category 4 world of Hyatt property, meaning that:

  • A free night in a standard room costs 15,000 points, and you can also redeem category 1-4 free night certificates here
  • A free night in a standard suite costs 24,000 points, and a free night in a premium suite costs 30,000 points

For context, I value World of Hyatt points at ~ 1.5 cents each, so 15,000 points is worth ~ $ 225 to me. Initially, the hotel rates from less than $ 200 per night, but I imagine that over time we will see the rates increase as travel restrictions are lifted.

Why I’m rather lukewarm about this hotel

It’s great to have another Hyatt option in Bali, but personally I’m not sure I would put it on my bucket list:

  • Bali has endless luxury hotels of the highest standard, and many of them can be booked with points, so there are no excellent options
  • I find that the Andaz brand is really contradictory, so I do not trust much in this hotel, just as far as the brand is concerned.
  • I do not like very much the environment in which this hotel is, and would rather be in Nusa Dua, Seminyak or Ubud, in terms of easy access to restaurants and excursions, depending on what I am looking for.
  • The fact that this hotel shares a spa with the 350+ room Hyatt Regency next door does not sound like a great experience; we are talking about 500+ rooms that all use the same spa, and spa treatments are a great reason to come to Bali

So I am sure that the hotel will be perfect and beautiful, and many will like this hotel. But if I do not hear otherwise from people staying here, I do not expect myself to prioritize the hotel the next time I visit Bali.

Andaz Bali shares a spa with Hyatt Regency

Bottom line

The 149-room Andaz Bali is finally open after about five years of delay (the hotel would have opened in 2016). It’s right next to the Hyatt Regency, which was also recently refurbished.

It’s great to see another Hyatt option in Bali, but personally I’m not sure I would fly the world to stay here, given the endless luxury hotel options available in Bali.

What do you make of the Andaz Bali? Anyone considering staying, if / when possible?
