Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi say that the upcoming sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake will further develop the combat system.
The developers of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 said the game’s combat system would continue to further develop the series’ iconic battles. Final Fantasy VII Remake changed the combat system from the one used in the original game, eliminating turn-based battles for real-time action, while taking a look at the newer system from recent headlines such as Final Fantasy XV.
One thing that Final Fantasy VII Remake was excellent at making all the characters feel unique on the battlefield. Cloud can alternate between a lithe fighting style and a slow, counter-based fighting style, while Barret has excelled at throwing enemies from afar. Tifa had access to a number of different martial arts movements that she could freely switch, and Aerith exploded enemies with her magic powers. All this does not even take into account the Materia system, as well as the ability to summon monsters as allies.

One way the combat system is likely to change is by adding party members. Red XIII may not have been a playable in Final Fantasy VII Remake, but he is probably first in line to become a party member in the sequel. The abilities of the main characters will also have to be expanded, as they have not even reached the limits of what they did in the original version of Final Fantasy VII. If characters like Cait Sith, Cid, Yuffie and Vincent appear in the sequel, they will also need their own special abilities. It does not even consider brand new party members, because Square Enix can change the plot and mechanics as it pleases now. If Biggs heals, or Zack shows up alive, they should also be taken into account in the comparison.
There is a lot of room for the battle system to grow Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2. The main characters only faced the threats in Midgar, which make up only a small portion of the original game. The combat system may need to be overhauled once the players reach the world map and have access to open spaces, and there may also need to be a battle adapted for the inevitable underwater battle against Emerald Weapon. Square Enix has enough space to develop the combat system in future games, especially now that the story has left the original Final Fantasy 7 behind.
