FBI releases photos of suspects wanted in alleged assault on officer during Capitol riot

Federal authorities on Sunday released photos of seven suspects wanted in an alleged assault on a police officer in Washington, DC during the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.

In a statement, the FBI claims that the suspects, all men, assaulted Mike Fanone of the Metropolitan Police Officer after trespassing on the Capitol building.

The case is one of more than 300 authorities investigating in connection with the January 6 riot, a law enforcement official said Sunday. Seventy-four people have been charged with federal crimes, and 42 others have been charged in DC Superior Court.

Among those arrested is a man who allegedly stole House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Conservative activist and recently elected state legislator from West Virginia, and a Virginia police officer.

Investigators have examined more than 150,000 photos and videos of tipsters.

Fanone told NBC Washington that he had a mild heart attack during the riot after he was repeatedly beaten with a shock gun and beaten with a flag with images of police.

Fanone said the rioters took his license plate, his radio and a magazine with ammunition.

“Guys tried to grab my gun,” he told the station. “They chanted, ‘Kill him with his own gun.'”

Another officer, Christina Laury, told NBC Washington that rioters assaulted officers with gunpowder, metal poles and “anything” in their attempt to enter the building.

Fanone said some of the group, after he started shouting that he had children, helped bring him to safety.

“Thank you to the people who helped me,” he told NBC Washington. “But I — you’re there.”

The riot left five people dead, including Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick.
