PAPILLION, Neb. (KETV) – A Nebraska family thought they were safe from COVID-19 after fighting it, but months later everyone faced the virus again.
Chuck Conboy Sr. (67) says he had a terrifying moment walking to a holiday festival in November. He, his wife and sons then tested positive for COVID-19.
I walked about 200 feet and could not breathe. And I mean, it was a panicky feeling. “I have never had anything like this in my life,” said Conboy.
The family has fully recovered from the virus. But, nine weeks later, Conboy says he started to feel very tired and tested positive for COVID-19 again.
“I woke up and had a fever. It jumped to 102 degrees, which is high for me. I thought, ‘Oh, my God, not again,’ ‘he said.
Conboy says the second infection is much worse than the first.
‘It hit me just like a truck, and this time it knocked me down. Actually, it’s the first day – day nine – that I’m halfway back to normal. “If you had asked me yesterday, I did not even know where I was,” he said.
Conboy’s wife and children are also ill again, and he says the symptoms are also going on faster.
‘As for the symptoms, it was much worse and fed quickly. Taste and smell immediately disappeared. The temperature immediately skyrocketed, and it was not just me. It was the whole family, “said Conboy.
With the lifting of restrictions in Nebraska, Conboy is worried that the virus will increase again.
Dr. Mark Rupp of Nebraska Medicine says recurrent infections like the Conboys are rare, but not unheard of. Some people who get COVID-19 may develop natural immunity that lasts for several months, but there is no concrete evidence that is the case for everyone.
“This could be one of the explanations: that people with a very mild illness do not have such a strong immune response and do not have such a long-lasting reaction,” Rupp said.
