Falcons hire Arthur Smith as head coach

Arthur Smith is the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

The team and former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator agreed to their terms Friday, the organization announced. Smith replaces Dan Quinn and Raheem Morris. Quinn was sacked by the Hawks after a difficult start and Morris was named the interim coach but was not promoted.

Smith, 38, has been with the Titans for ten seasons, including the last two as attacking coordinator under coach Mike Vrabel. The Titans finished 10th in points and 12th in yards in 2019, and fourth in points and second in yards in 2020. Tennessee both reached the playoffs this season.

Atlanta could use a boost in offense, something it has not seen since Kyle Shanahan carried out the offense.

The Hawks went to the playoffs twice and lost Super Bowl LI to the New England Patriots in overtime after leading 28-3. Atlanta reached the playoffs during the 2017 season, but was jumped out of the division round. Atlanta has not been back since.

In Quinn’s time, Atlanta finished in the top 10 in yards scored five times, but finished only in the top 10 in points scored twice. The team was led by Matt Ryan at the quarter and Julio Jones at the wide receiver. The team can use another weapon or use their aging veterans enough to return to the playoffs.

Titans wide receiver AJ Brown gave Smith his approval on Twitter.

“Keep me responsible from day 1. I always tried to improve. Atlanta got a good one,” Brown tweeted.
