Fact to check the last night of the Democratic National Convention

Throughout the meeting, keynote speakers generally spoke or presented subjective opinions in general – and if they did claim, it was largely accurate.

Here are some facts we checked out Thursday night.

In accepting the Democratic nomination for president, Joe Biden condemned the current official and asked Americans to judge President Donald Trump on the facts.

Among them: “More than 50 million people have applied for unemployment this year,” Biden said.

Facts first:Biden actually underestimated how many Americans submitted for the first time claims for unemployment.
More than 57 million people have filed initial jobless claims since March 21, when the coronavirus pandemic called for government officials to stay home and close non-essential businesses, leading to a record number of Americans applying for benefits.

Another 15 million people applied under the Temporary Unemployment Assistance Program for Pandemic, which Congress created at the end of March as part of its $ 2 billion coronavirus relief package. It broadens the country’s unemployment program to those who do not normally qualify, including freelancers, performers, independent and self-employed contractors. It is also open to certain people who have lost their jobs due to the coronavirus, including those who have to stay home because their children’s schools have been closed.

However, this is not equal to the number of people who are unemployed or receiving benefits. Some fired workers probably applied more than once and others may have turned down their claims because they did not meet the qualifications.

About 28 million people received unemployment benefits from 1 August, according to the most recent data from the Department of Labor.
Just over 16 million Americans were unemployed in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Small businesses

During his speech, Biden claimed that nearly 17% of small businesses were closed this year.

Facts first: That may be right, but we do not know if the closures are permanent.

There is little real-time data on closing small businesses because they do not regularly file for bankruptcy if they close their doors. The closure orders from the state and the city have forced many small businesses to close for weeks or not months this week. Even some of the owners who have reopened may not know if they can stay afloat as they struggle to get customers back and continue the pandemic.

Fact check the first two nights of the Democratic rally
Research by a Harvard university called Opportunity Insights found that the number of small businesses operating on August 7 decreased by 19.5% compared to January. In a separate survey of small businesses conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in mid-July, it was found that 12% of owners said their business was temporarily closed and another 1% said they were permanently closed, and 1% said that they do not know.

A Biden campaign spokesman Michael Gwin told CNN that it took the average of the two studies

New Jersey senator Cory Booker has blamed Trump for praising the economy at a time when the pandemic has claimed the lives of many Americans.

“Last week, Donald Trump said, and I quote, ‘Our economy is doing well,’ while 40 million Americans are at risk of losing their homes, 30 million are not getting enough to eat and 5.4 million people are losing their health care. “because of this crisis,” Booker said Thursday night.

Facts first: Booker’s figures on food security and housing are correct, according to on the Census Bureau. His figure on the number of people who have lost their health care is based on an estimate. And while millions of people have probably lost their health coverage, it is not yet known exactly how much was left uninsured.

About 44.7 million adults missed out on last month’s rent or mortgage loan or trust that their household can pay next month’s rent on time, according to the most recent census survey of household censuses, conducted between July 16 and July 21. This is 26.5% of American adults.

29.3 million adults – or 12.1% – were also in households where the past seven days sometimes or often were not enough to eat, the census survey found.

As for 5.4 million Americans losing health insurance due to the coronavirus pandemic, it comes from a report by Families USA released in mid-July. The left-wing advocacy group estimates how many retired workers have lost their work-based coverage. But official data have yet to be released, and some other health care experts have said the Families USA report is based on rough projections.

Bloomberg

During his speech, Michael Bloomberg made three economic demands, as opposed to the administrations of Donald Trump and Barack Obama.

“Biden and Obama have created more jobs over the past three years than the Trump administration has done over their first three,” Bloomberg said, adding later that “Biden has helped save one million jobs in the automotive industry. Trump has lost 250,000 manufacturing jobs. ”

Facts first: Bloomberg is right about all three claims, although the loss of jobs arose after the coronavirus pandemic.

As reported by CNN, 8.1 million jobs have been added to the U.S. economy over the past three years, which is 23% more than the 6.6 million jobs added in Trump’s first three years.
And according to a study by The Center for Automotive Research, the 2009 buoyancy saved 1.5 million jobs.
While Bloomberg’s characterization of the loss of employment was approximately accurate, it relies heavily on the impact of the coronavirus. Between January 2017, when Trump was sworn in as president, and July 2020, manufacturing work declined by 257,000, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Before the coronavirus pandemic hit the US, manufacturing work increased. As of July, they have already started bouncing back from their low point in April.
