With the first phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal, barely days away, a video of an old man in torn clothes being beaten by a mob is circulating. It is alleged that the man was beaten in front of his daughter because he performed ‘aarti’ in his house in Bengal.

The Hindi caption, along with the video, translates into: ‘Puuja doing homework is dangerous in Bengal. An old Hindu man was dragged in front of his daughter and beaten in the middle of the road for performing ‘aarti’ in his own house. ‘

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation along with the video misleading. The man, a Hindu priest, was beaten for allegedly molesting a girl in Kolkata.

We found that the same video was also circulated in September 2017, alleging that Muslims threw down a Hindu Brahman in Bengal because the sound of his puja bells disturbed them. At that time, the police in Kolkata rejected the claim.

In a series of tweets, police in Kolkata responded to the fact-checking website “SMHoaxSlayer” and revealed the truth behind the video.

Police said the video was shared with ominous allegations as the priest allegedly molested a girl, after which he was treated by her family members. Kolkata police also mention the FIR numbers registered in the case. The FIRs were registered on 31 August 2017 against the priest and the people who assaulted him.

On September 2, 2017, the news portal “SKM 91 News” posted a video of the incident on Facebook and said a resident of Raolkedra Pandit, Goa Bagan area in Kolkata, was beaten by the public because he made a woman’s disgusting remarks passed it on.

It is also heard in the video that people call the priest ‘Market Mein Naya Ram Rahim’, referring to the self-styled Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim who was convicted in a rape case in August 2017.

A few other videos of the accused priest are also available on YouTube, showing him dealing with men. Here, too, is the title that the incident comes from the Goa Bagan area of ​​Kolkata.
