Fact test: Viral post alleging that the deaths of 17 female doctors in the bus accident in Karnataka are misleading

According to a viral report on social media, 17 female professors from a medical college in Karnataka died in a fatal bus accident on the Bengaluru-Pune highway. The report shared three photos, one of the broken remains of a bus and two group photos with the claim.

The caption along with the photos say: ‘RIP. 17 doctors doctors, all #professors of the gynecologist of the JJMM College Davengere, Karnataka, who are going on a picnic from Davengere to Goa, were killed instantly on the Bengaluru Pune highway when their minibus at DHARWAD with a sand-laden at 07:30 on Friday tipper crashed. ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation misleading. A group of 17 former students of St Paul’s Convent in Davanagere, Karnataka, were traveling to Goa when their vehicle collided with a truck on Friday 15 January. Nine women, including a doctor, died of injuries.

Using a reverse image search and appropriate keywords, we found that the viral photos were summarized news reports about the accident that took place on the Hubballi-Dharwad bypass in the Dharwad district of Karnataka. The women were schoolmates reunited for their annual alumni trip.

According to media reports, the 17 women were 1989 allies of St Paul’s School in Davanagere and only one among them was a doctor.

According to a report by ‘The Indian ExpressThe women were traveling to Goa as part of an annual alumni gathering when the minibus they were traveling in collided with a truck on the Hubballi-Dharwad bypass in northern Karnataka.

Reports according to “The New Indian Express”() And“The Times of IndiaAlso confirms that Dr Veena Prakash, who worked as a gynecologist at JJM Medical College in Davanagere, was the only doctor in the group.

We further reached out to P Krishnakant, Dharwad Superintendent of Police (rural), who confirmed that as of January 18, nine women in the group of 17 members had succumbed to injuries.

‘So far, 11 people have died in the January 15 crash. Nine of them were women and they were part of the 17-member group. The claim that everyone was a doctor is not true. There was only one doctor. They were alumni of St Paul’s Convent in Davanagere, “Krishnakant explained.

We also spoke to Dr Prasanna Anaberu, the general secretary of the Davanagere unit of the Indian Medical Association, and a professor in the orthopedics department at JJM Medical College.

Dr. Anaberu refuted the viral allegation of the deaths of 17 female doctors: ‘Only one of the 17 women who traveled in the bus was a doctor and she sustained injuries. Her name is Dr Veena Prakash and she was a professor in the Department of Gynecology at JMM Medical College. There were two other women in the group, Usha Ram and Preeti Ravikumar, who were women of doctors. ”

When the news of the fatal bus accident became known on January 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had it tweeted, who expresses sadness over the incident.

It is therefore clear that the viral allegation that 17 female doctors succumbed to their injuries in a road accident in Karnataka is misleading. The women were former classmates from St Paul’s Convent School in Davanagere, and nine of them, including one doctor, died in the crash.
