Fact test: the video of the MLA of the Congress of Himachal is shared as MP from Nepal criticizing Modi

A short clip of a politician criticizing Narendra Modi in a house spread on social media with the claim that the prime minister was discussed in the Nepalese parliament.

In the 2-minute and 20-second video, the man is heard criticizing Modi for his foreign visits, demonization, economy, gasoline prices, as well as the amount spent during the visit of former United States President Donald Trump to India .

The caption in Hindi, along with the video, translates into: ‘Discussions on Modi ji in the Nepalese parliament. Some people will now say that they have no right to talk about our country. But after hearing the truth, I’m ashamed. ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the video did not come from the Nepalese parliament but from the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. The man who criticizes Modi is Kinnaur’s Congress MLA, Jagat Singh Negi.

Similar allegations are also viral on Facebook. The archived versions can be seen here, here and here.

AFWA investigation

Using keywords, we found the same video that was uploaded to the official Facebook page of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Unit on March 21st. According to the description of the video, the man who is seen criticizing Modi is the MLA Jagat Singh Negi.

The video description in Hindi translates into: “Hearing from Kinnaur Congress MLA Jagat Singh Negi about the Prime Minister of the country”.

We also found a longer version of the same video uploaded to the “Hindustan Live” YouTube channel.

“Congress MLA Jagat Singh Negi gave a brilliant speech in Himachal Pradesh Vidhan on privatization. Jagat Singh Negi has targeted the Modi government to sell government companies. “The MLA of the Congress opposed privatization in the Modi government,” the video describes.

The same track was also shared by Negi on his Facebook page on March 18 as a video from the budget session. Negi is a two-time MLA of Kinnaur and also the former Deputy Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly.

It should also be noted that Negi, along with other lawmakers, wears in the viral video ‘Bushehri’, the traditional Himachali head covering announcing one’s political commitment. The color of the band covering half of the cap of the cap is green, considered the color of Congress. For BJP, the color is maroon.

It is therefore clear that the video in question comes from Himachal Pradesh and has nothing to do with the Nepalese parliament.
