Several Facebook users shared the photos with a Hindi caption translating to: “This is the Modi government’s Beti Bachao. Share it so much that punishment is given.”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation misleading. This 2016 photo comes from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh when the state was under the Samajwadi Party government. The woman and her husband were assaulted when she challenged her molesters.

Old picture reappears

Using reverse image search, we found several media reports about 2016 about this incident, along with the same picture.

The disturbing video of the incident is also available in some mainstream media reports.

According to these news reports, the woman and her husband were assaulted in the Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh after they were opposed to the lewd comments by a group of men. Some reports claim that she was touched in public and beaten by the accused when she resisted them.

According to the news agency ANI, the police acted and arrested one of the culprits.
