Fact test: the farmer seen collapsing in the video at Singhu Border is not dead

Several farmers lost their lives in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi during the ongoing protests against three controversial farm laws imposed by the Center. While most died due to accidents or natural causes, some also died by suicide in solidarity with the agitating farmers.

Through this, a shocking video worked on social media showing how a man collapses on a road after which people in the area come to his rescue. It is alleged that the video is of a farmer who died after collapsing during the ongoing protests at Singhu Border.

The caption in Hindi translates to: “Farmer at Singhu Border dies live on camera. Those who only see pizza and biryani, jeans and BMW in farmers’ protests and think they are terrorists should also look. ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the claim along with the video untrue. The man seen in the video had a cardiac arrest on Singhu Border on January 3, but he is now stable.

Some have been verified Twitter handles also posted the video. The archive of the viral post can be seen here.

AFWA investigation

We found that a Punjab journalist named Gagandeep Singh posted a video on Twitter showing a man identifying himself as orthopedic Lovepreet Singh Pabla clarifying the incident. Pabla says the man who collapsed and whose video goes viral with the claim that he died is not dead.

We found Dr Pabla’s contact number on the internet and reached him. Pabla said the farmer seen in the viral video collapsed in front of Singhu Border in front of him on January 3 and reiterated that he was not dead. Pabla is an orthopedist at Waves Hospital in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district.

“Our team, who visit the borders of Delhi every weekend to provide medical assistance to the farmers, checked on the old man and found his blood pressure low,” Pabla said.

The team diagnosed him, after which he regained consciousness and returned to Amritsar for further treatment. Pabla told AFWA that the man was Iqbal Singh and that he had come with his family members from Amritsar to Singhu Border to take part in the protest.

Pabla also posted the explanatory video on the rumor on Facebook.

With the help of dr. Pabla contacted AFWA the brother of Iqbal Singh, Jasbir Singh, and cousin Amanbir Siali. Both assisted Iqbal Singh in the hospital in Amritsar and told us that he had had a serious heart attack but that he is now stable and out of danger. Iqbal Singh is being admitted to Randhawa Hospital in Amritsar.

According to Jasbir Singh, 74-year-old Iqbal Singh has retired from the post of Divisional Officer (SDO) at the Department of Public Works in Uttar Pradesh. Due to legal issues he does not receive state pension, the reason why he is stressed and has medical problems.

Amanbir told AFWA that Iqbal Singh was with him to Singhu Border to protest against the farm laws as they are also farmers. Apart from this, journalist Gagandeep Singh also tweeted a photo of Iqbal Singh after regaining consciousness at Singhu Border.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the claim in the viral post is false. The man who was seen collapsing in the video is not dead and is in a critical condition in a hospital.
