Fact test: photos of riots in Delhi related to common tension in Bhainsa in Telangana

Following a dispute between two religious sects, Bhainsa has been under strict curfew since March 8. On Saturday (March 13), a fight between two people over a bicycle accident resulted in fresh violence between two groups.

In it, two photos of badly damaged properties on social media went viral with the claim that it is so that the Muslims attacked the Hindus in Bhainsa and looted and burned their properties. The first photo shows a man standing on a road and surrounded by burnt shops, buildings and a overturned car. The second photo shows some policemen standing in the devastated area.

The photos are shared on Twitter with the caption “In case of deliberate, large-scale violence, a Muslim mob attacked members of the Hindu community and looted and burned their property in the city of Telangana in Bhainsa. The Muslim mob went on a rampage made and threw stones. at the police who rushed to the place. #SaveHindusOfBhainsa “.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the viral post is not entirely true. Although common violence hit Bhainsa branch in Telangana recently, these photos were taken in Delhi after common clashes broke out in February 2020.

AFWA investigation

Using reverse image search, we found that both the photos were taken in Delhi last year when rioters vandalized several shops and buildings after violent clashes in the national capital.

The first photo is available on the image stock website Getty Images. According to the caption, the photo shows the aftermath of clashes between people who support and oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in New Delhi.

The photo was taken by AFP photographer Sajjad Hussain on February 26, 2020. The photo has also been used by several other news sites with the same information.

The second photo also found its way various media reports related to the riots in Delhi. The photo was taken by a photojournalist from the news agency PTI in a violence-ridden area in North East Delhi. The infamous Delhi riots of 2020 have the lives of 53 people and several others injured.

Here it was determined that the viral photos are more than one year old and have nothing to do with Bhainsa violence.

What happened in Bhainsa?

According to a report in The Times of India, problems started on March 7 in Bhainsa when the handle of a bicycle accidentally brushed a passer-by belonging to another community. After this, members of both groups descended on the scene and attacked each other.

Police said some grocery stores, vehicles and homes were burnt down during the violence. The violence injured 12 people, including two journalists and three police officers.

Referring to the district superintendent of police, The Hindu reported that 15 cases were registered and 14 persons, including two municipal councilors – one from AIMIM and another independent – were arrested and detained.

Joint clashes in Bhainsa also took place in January and May last year in which more than 30 people were injured and several properties were damaged.
