Fact test: old video of rigging in Bengal shared as footage from Tripura ADC polls

Elections to the Autonomous District Council of the 28-member Tripura Tribal Areas were held on April 6 and the results declared on April 10.

Meanwhile, a video is circulating on social media showing how a man helps voters in a ballot box. The text embedded in the video in Bangla translates into: ‘This is the true picture of ADC polls in Tripura. Did the BJP just mention this fair and peaceful election? ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation along with the video to be misleading. The video has nothing to do with Tripura. It was shot during the 2019 Lok Sabha election inside a polling station in the Bolpur constituency in West Bengal.

AFWA investigation

While researching the video, we most noticed that none of the voters or voting agents wore masks. It has been made mandatory for all elections held in the post-Covid situation.

In the reverse search of the key frames of the video, we found that the same track was posted on Facebook on April 30, 2019. The Bangla allegation, along with the video, said: ” A hidden camera reveals how the ruling party set up polling stations in hockey. Video shot in the polls of Amgaria under the MLA constituency of the Ketugram and the constituency of the MP Bolpur. ”

Looking at it as an indication, we did a keyword search and found a report with the same video on the prominent Bangla news channel ‘ABP Ananda’. The report, which was uploaded on May 9, 2019, stated: “False votes are cast in the presence of voting agents. The video was shot in a polling station in Ketugram under the Bolpur MP constituency. The Electoral Commission ordered a return visit. ”

A further search led us to another report by “The Quint” published on May 9, 2019, stating that the Electoral Commission was re-entering the polling station number 52 in Ketugram in the Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal announced. Voting will be held on May 12 from 7 to 6 p.m. This parliamentary constituency voted in the fourth phase on 29 April. ”

Therefore, it is clear that the viral video comes from West Bengal, and that it was shot during the 2019 general election inside a polling station under the Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency. It has nothing to do with the recent ADC polls in Tripura.

A newly formed alliance of indigenous parties swept the ADC polls, winning 18 of the 28 seats. The Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance of TIPRA is led by former Congress President Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman. The ruling BJP won nine seats, while one seat was awarded to an independent candidate.
