A strong earthquake shook Tajikistan in Central Asia around 22:30 on 12 February 2021. The country was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 and earthquakes were also experienced in various parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR.
Now, two photos of critically damaged buildings have been working on social media. The photos are said to have come from Tajikistan after the earthquake hit the country.
The claim, which is viral on Facebook, has been shared by more than a thousand people on the social networking site.
Several netizens also posted the photos Twitter. The caption to one of these posts reads “#Tokkies Tajikistan after earthquake”.
India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the viral post misleading. While one of the photos was clicked in Turkey, the other one is from Italy when earthquakes shook these countries in 2020 and 2018 respectively.

Let’s look at the truth about both the photos separately.

Using reverse image search, we found several news reports regarding this photo. According to a CNBC news release, was clicked on the photo after a massive 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on January 24, 2020.
The earthquake at least 36 people killed and several buildings damaged. The quake affected the province of Elazig in Turkey.

This photo of a damaged house was taken from the Italian island of Sicily, clicked after an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 hit the region in December 2018. report that the earthquake was caused by the eruption of the volcano Etna.
At least 28 people were injured in the quake and some buildings were damaged. The viral picture is also in a news report on BBC.
Although the viral report with both photos shows the destruction caused by an earthquake, it has nothing to do with the earthquake that hit Tajikistan on the night of February 12th. The photos are old and come from Turkey and Italy.
Also no major damage or casualties was reported in Tajikistan for the submission of this story.
