A viral message on social media claims that the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will close madrasas that do not celebrate Republic Day on January 26th.
One such place in Hindi translated into: “Madrasas who will not unfold the Tricolor or sing the national anthem on 26 January are closed – Yogi ji from UP. Jai Shri Ram ”.
India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation misleading. Mohsin Raza, UP Minister for Minority Welfare, confirmed to us that the Yogi government has not issued such an order regarding the strike of madrasas in the state.

AFWA investigation
An order from the UP government to close madrasas that do not celebrate Republic Day would certainly have made headlines. However, we could not find any reliable media report or circular on the matter.
According to some media reports, since 2017, the UP government has been advising all madrasas to record videos of events organized during Independence Day. However, no report mentions the closure of madrasas that violate the advice.
After that, we reached out to Mohsin Raza, UP Minister of State Institution for Minority Welfare, for better clarity.
The minister said the UP government had not given any instructions to close madrasas that did not raise the national flag or sing the national anthem on Republic Day. There is an existing order asking madrasas to celebrate Independence Day and Republic Day. But we never said that madrasas would be closed because they do not. We try to modernize madrasas and not close. ”
AFWA also spoke to Maulana Abdul Jalil Nizami, General Secretary of All India Tanzeem Ulema-e-Islam, who confirmed that there is no question of the closure of madrasas in any government order.
‘The viral allegation is false. We have been receiving advice since 2017 to ask madrasas to celebrate Independence Day and Republic Day and to maintain videos and photos of celebrations. “However, we have not received a circular stating that madrasas will be closed if they do not hoist the national flag or sing the national anthem,” Nizami said.

Since 2017, the Yogi government has had agendas for the modernization of madrasa education in UP by including modern subjects apart from religious instruction.
In the state budget for 2020-21, the UP government allocated $ 479 million for the modernization of recognized madrasas and maktabs.
