Joseph R. Biden, popularly known as Joe Biden, was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States during a low ceremony held on January 20 in the American Capitol. Kamala Harris also took the oath as the new US vice president.
In a viral post on social media, it is alleged that Biden invited all the neighbors of India for his inauguration, but India was not invited to the event.
The caption in Hindi one translates such a statement: ‘All the neighboring countries of India were invited to Biden’s oath ceremony in the USA. But India did not get the invitation. Why did this happen? ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the claim to be false. The Indian Ambassador to the USA, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, was invited to Biden’s inauguration day and he also took part in the ceremony. Traditionally, foreign leaders are not invited to the US presidential oath.

Using keywords, we found that the official Twitter account of the Embassy of India in Washington on January 20 shared the images of Sandhu at the U.S. Capitol. The caption on the photo reads: ‘Ambassador @ SandhuTaranjitS at the Capitol to attend the 59th presidential inauguration – the ceremony of US President Joseph Robinette Biden jr.
This tweet was later tweeted again by Sandhu and said: “Pleasure to attend the historic ceremony!”.

Several media houses also reported on India’s ambassador to the US attending Biden’s inauguration ceremony.
Apart from Sandhu, several Foreign missions in the U.S. capital were also invited by the Biden Inauguration Committee for the January 20 ceremony. China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Taiwan were some of them.
It should be noted that the incoming president is usually the main guest during the inauguration ceremony of the president in the USA, and that the heads of nationals or foreign leaders are not traditionally invited to this event.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic and the fear of violence, members of the Inauguration Committee of Biden urged Americans to watch the ceremony from their homes.
In November last year, several social media outlets from India claimed that former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be the main guest at Biden’s swearing-in ceremony. India Today denied the claim at the time.
It is therefore clear that the claim that India was not invited to Biden’s oath division is not false. The Indian Ambassador to the USA, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, was indeed invited to the inauguration of Biden and he took part in the ceremony.
