India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation along with the photo to be misleading. The government of Bengal has started a housing scheme for slum dwellers along Golf Club Road, adjacent to the Golf Green area in South Kolkata. But the photo used in the post is of a residential complex built by the government of Bangladesh for residents of slums in the city of Bazar of Cox.

AFWA investigation

Using reverse image search, we have the original image on a Bangladesh news website. This site uploaded the photo along with an article on July 23, 2020. According to the information on the website, the photo is a residential complex built by the government of Bangladesh in the city of Bazar of Cox.

The complex was built according to the Bangladeshi government’s Ashrayon Prakalpa scheme to rehabilitate slum dwellers from Jhau Bagan and Baliari areas west of Cox’s Bazar airport. The residents of the slums have been evicted to make way for the expansion of the airport project.

Various Bangladeshi media has published articles on this subject residential project with similar pictures.

To confirm the part of the Bengali government for slum dwellers, India Today contacted local correspondent Jyotirmoy Dutta. He arranged the original picture of the buildings built by the state government on Golf Club Road for slum dwellers.

Therefore, we can conclude that while the allegation of a residential project for slum dwellers in Kolkata is true, the picture used with it is of a similar plan used by the government of Bangladesh for displaced people.
