Fact-finding: a list of UP Congress’s minority members who have gone viral with a common denominator

If one can believe a viral image of a document, the Congress Party in Uttar Pradesh has not appointed a single district chairperson from the Hindu community. A list of UP Congress’s district chairmen has gone viral on social media, claiming it consists of Muslim names only.

The image circulated on the internet with the caption “Congress is now renamed the Indian Muslim League … as a conspiracy to divide the nation again …”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the viral post misleading. This is a list of the district chairmen appointed by Congress in December 2020 for its minority division in Uttar Pradesh. The list therefore only contains names of the Muslim / minority community.

The misleading post is doing the rounds on Facebook and Twitter. The same photo with a Hindi caption also went viral in December last year.

AFWA investigation

Using appropriate keywords, we found that the same photo was uploaded on December 9, 2020 from the Twitter handle of “INC Sandesh”. According to the caption of this tweet, these are appointments for Uttar Pradesh PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) Minority Department.

During that time, the news agency ANI also tweeted about the appointments of these district chairpersons for the UP Congress’s minority doctrine.

“It is understood that the district chairperson for the Congressional minority cells would come only from the minority community, and not from the majority (Hindu),” Saad Siddiqui, former national coordinator, minority department, told the All India Congress Committee to AFWA said.

We also found that the Goa unit of Bharatiya Janata Party recently declared an executive committee for ‘BJP Minority Morcha’ and tweeted a list with the names of the committee members. The list here also consists only of the minority community.

It can therefore be concluded with certainty that the virus post is misleading. Indeed, Congress has only appointed Muslims / minorities for the appointment of District Chairperson in UP, but that is because the appointments are for the minority department.
