Fact check: Viral video of Japan’s lightning fast electric train is not real

Will a train journey in Japan take less time than a flight? Some netizens definitely believe it!

A video of a train ride is being shared on social media along with the claim that the new electric train in Japan is twice as fast as an F-16 fighter jet. Many Facebook users posted the video of nearly five minutes of a train ride from the inside. A speedometer and map show the ride on the screen.

The caption reads: ‘Japan’s new electric train 4800 km / h. From Osaka to Tokyo 515 km takes 10 minutes. 4 times faster than airplanes. 2 times faster than F 16. Good job done by Japanese … ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that this is not an actual train journey, but a time lapse video of an express train journey from Osaka to Tokyo. This journey usually takes 2.5 hours.

Truth behind the video

A watermark in the upper left corner of the viral video reads ‘Fermata Studio’. Using keywords, we found that it’s a YouTube channel that mostly uploads simulation and time lapse videos of trains and airplanes.

In the “about” section, the YouTuber expressed his concern about the huge popularity of the channel which also affected him, as he also got online abuse for the videos. He led to the withdrawal of several videos.

‘I might release those videos again, or I might re-upload them, but I do not know how I feel. This channel has gotten a bit deserted, but I plan to continue making new videos at a slower pace. I have collected promising material and fantasies, so be patient, ”reads a section of the section.

We found the archived version of the original YouTube video created and uploaded by “Fermata Studio”. The title says: “[High-Speed Simulation] Shinkansen Bullet Train, Osaka to Tokyo (515km) within 10 minutes drive. The original video is ten minutes and 13 seconds long, of which the viral video was carved out.

The YouTuber declared it a time-lapse video. The description says: This movie is a fiction. It usually takes 2.5 hours from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo. Made by a method called “Time variant hyper-lapse / time-lapse”.

But this video is not currently available. The YouTuber said that many fact-checking sites dismissed various misleading allegations that went viral with the video.

‘AFP Fact Check’ in an article said that they spoke to the YouTuber, who said: ‘I have been taking window views of trains and planes for the past seven years. Using the videos, I wanted to create a science fiction video that enables people to experience extreme speeds that are in fact impossible. ‘

“Fermata Studio” has uploaded many more time-lapse videos of planes and trains on the channel.

According to news reports, Japan’s bullet train has the ability to reach a top speed of 400 km per hour. But the viral claim that Japan’s electric train travels at 4,800 km per hour is false. And the video used with the claim is a time lapse video of a train journey by bullet.
