Fact check: video misleads about the origin and impact of viruses

A video shared on social media, which claims that COVID-19 was created in a laboratory as a bioweapon, that it can not hurt healthy people and that protecting restrictions does not affect the daily lives of people with a weak immune system.

In a video shared here (Facebook) with Facebook, the speaker says: ‘It was now created in a laboratory in Wuhan? The reason why they messed with such things – of course we know what was crazy in that situation. This is biological warfare. ”(Timestamp 1.20)

The majority of virologists and experts in infectious diseases have long said that the new virus probably developed (here) naturally. The U.S. Office of Director of National Intelligence said it agrees with a broad scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not man-made or genetically modified. (here)

A recently completed investigation by the World Health Organization into the origin of the virus has concluded that the possibility of a laboratory leak is highly unlikely and that it should not be investigated further (here).

Later in the video, the speaker on COVID-19 says: “If you are fit and healthy, guess what? God has armored you with an immune system. That’s right. So you have nothing to fear. ”

Reuters has addressed similar claims in the past (here). While young and healthy people are at a much lower risk of dying from the virus, they can still experience serious illnesses and long-term effects (here).

The speaker then says: “Let’s look at the effect it has on people with a weak or suppressed immune system. Or that underline (sic) health conditions. As with most things, they are already running a risk. They must therefore protect. They need to do what they normally do. Because, guess what? They take these precautions every day in their daily lives because of the diseases they already have and that they already have to take these steps to protect themselves. It does not differ for them. ”

Elderly and immunocompromised people at higher risk of becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID-19 and are advised to take extra steps to protect themselves, such as working from home, not going to shops or pharmacies do not go (here).

A study by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in June 202 found that 61% of clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) people reported no difference in their mental health and well-being, but that 35% of CEV individuals reported their mental ability reported health and well-being deteriorated during the pandemic. Of CEV people under the age of 50 and between the ages of 50 and 59, almost half reported deteriorating mental health. (bit.ly/2NncJiN).

VERDICT

Partly false. There is no evidence that COVID-19 is a bio-weapon manufactured in a laboratory. The disease can affect young and healthy people. Guidelines for people at higher risk due to serious illness caused by coronavirus.
