Fact check: Video does not show Trump family celebrating during Capitol siege

Social media users are sharing a video that allegedly shows President Donald Trump “celebrating” or “partying” Laura Branigan’s song during the Capitol siege on January 6. The footage includes Trump and members of his family, including Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle, as well as White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, were filmed at least an hour before the first hurdles around the Capitol were violated.

A Facebook post with the claim here reads: ‘While the assault took place, they allegedly enjoyed the assault on the capital’. It is also visible on YouTube youtu.be/-4LujHw7SsU, with the title “Trump crime family and its chief of staff are having a happy party while rioters attack the country’s capital”.

Reuters (here) and other newspapers such as the Washington Post (here) and the New York Times (here) reported that Trump delivered a speech this morning in Ellipse Park near the White House, and the scenes of violence at the Capitol monitored. on cable television from the White House.

The January 6 surveys circulating are ahead of the dates of the riots at the Capitol. However, in his speech earlier in the day (here), Trump urged his supporters “to fight” and marched to the Capitol to pressure their elected officials to reject the result of the election he lost (here).

The video in this claim is on Donald Trump Jr. published his Facebook page (here) and shows the family before Trump’s speech began this afternoon (here). The post that has now been deleted is archived here: archive.vn/eKOhS and contains a text with a text with the words “family behind the scenes”. Trump can be seen.

Footage of the demonstration (youtu.be/pa9sT4efsqY?t=2021, youtu.be/ht20eDYmLXU?t=8930 and here, timestamp 3:26:25) shows that Branigan’s song was played before Trump took the stage (youtu .be / pa9sT4efsqY? t = 2317) around noon (here).

Around the time stamps 00:27 youtu.be/-4LujHw7SsU?t=27 and 00:36 youtu.be/-4LujHw7SsU of the video circulating on social media, the screens show a crowd, an empty stage and a blue screen with the text “Save America Rally”. This is consistent with the screens of the stage before Trump arrives (see youtu.be/pa9sT4efsqY?t=2107).

As detailed by the New York Times here and the Washington Post here detailed timelines, the first obstacles around the Capitol were violated between 12:53 and 1:03. Trump’s speech ended at about 1:10 p.m. The mob entered the building about an hour later at about 2:15 p.m.

Reuters footage of the Capitol siege is visible here, here and here.

Reuters had earlier exposed this mislabeled video circulating here in Spanish.

VERDICT

Partly false. Footage does show that Trump and his family look happy, but it is not during the siege as claimed. It was rather before his speech before the assault on the Capitol.
