Fact check: Unrelated image shared as police action against protesting farmers

Numerous farmers and policemen were injured in the violence that erupted during the tractor march in Delhi on Republic Day. Social media was also filled with photos of the clashes.

Amid this, an image collage, one of a Nihang Sikh waving a security personnel with a sword and another of an old man with a bandaged head and bruises on his face, went viral on social media, claiming that this is how the police attacked the farmer they were trying to attack.

The caption in Kannada, along with such one image collage translated into: “This is the condition of a fake farmer who swung the police with a sword.”

Similar claims in Hindi translates to: “Look what happened to him. Before and after “.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the allegation misleading. While the first image of the Nihang Sikh is from January 26, the second is one of a farmer who is part of the Kirti Kisan union that had a road accident in December last year.

AFWA investigation

A reverse image search revealed that the first photo was taken on January 26 in several news reports. According to reports, the photo comes from the violence that erupted during the tractor march on Republic Day.

The Indian Express“, Which contains the picture, endorsed it as:” A Nihang supporter of farmers clashes with the police at the Ghazipur border during their ‘Kisan Gantantra Parade’. “

According to the report, the men in the images are members of the Kirti Kisan union who had an accident while on their way to join the protest farmers at Delhi’s borders.

When we reverse search the second photo, we find it on Facebook between a set of images of a broken tractor and some Sikh men with bruises on their faces. This post was made through the Facebook page “Kirti Kisan-union”On 28 December 2020.

The verified Facebook page of Bikram Singh Majithia, the general secretary of Shiromani Akali Dal, also has the same set of images on 27 December 2020 and wishes the injured farmers a speedy recovery.

We also have a “News18 Punjab”Report published on 28 December 2020, confirming that the photos are a road accident that took place near Khanna in Punjab.

For better clarity, we reached out to Jitender Singh, the Punjab Secretary of State of Kirti Kisan Union, who confirmed that the picture is more than a month old.

‘The image is of an accident that took place near Khanna on December 26, 2020. There were almost twelve people in the tractor, including our union members and some Nihang Sikhs from Wadala town. “They were on their way to Delhi when their tractor was hit from behind by another vehicle,” Singh said.

‘While two of our members were seriously injured in the head, others sustained minor injuries. After the primary treatment, they continued to Delhi and are currently at the Kundli border. The Nihang Sikhs spread from the crash site. Our members still have bruises on their faces, “Singh added.

Assistant sub-inspector of the Doraha police station Gurmail Singh who visited the accident site in December last year also confirmed the incident.

It is therefore clear that the image of an old man with bruises on his face and a bandage on his head is of a member of the Kirti Kisan Union who, almost a month before the Republic Day violence in Delhi with a road accident.

ClaimA fake farmer who swung a sword for security personnel during the Republic Day violence in Delhi left a bandage and bruised face. ClosureWhile the image of a Nihang Sikh waving a sword for policemen is taken from the tractor march on January 26, the second photo of the injured man is from December 2020. This man encountered a road accident in Punjab on his way to Delhi.
