Fact check: this video of the police damaging CCTV is not linked to the January 26 tractor march

The tractor marches organized by Delhi on January 26 against the three farm laws in Delhi became violent and resulted in clashes between protesters and police.

In this context, a video, allegedly showing security personnel trying to break a CCTV camera installed at a petrol pump, is posted on social media blaming police for the violence on Republic Day.

The Hindi caption and the video translate into: ‘I stand with farmers. Now you can see who did the violent agitation, farmers or the police of Modi. # BoycottBJP ”.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the claim along with the video was false. This video is almost one year old and several media reports have linked it to the anti-CAA protests.

Using keyword search, we found the video in question, which was shared by several news sites in February 2020. According to these reports, the video shows the police damaging CCTV cameras in the Khureji Khas neighborhood in East Delhi.

We also found a screenshot of the same video that was reproduced in a report by The Quint. This portal chatted with some shopkeepers near the petrol pump seen in the video confirming that the video did indeed come from Khureji Khas.

The report quoted one of the shopkeepers as saying: ‘The police broke into the CCTV cameras that we also installed in our shops. The one in the video was set up by the protesters in Khureji. ”

The Logical Indian also shared the same video on the verified Facebook page on February 26, 2020.

On February 26, 2020, we found another report from Scroll.in that contained similar videos of police allegedly breaking CCTV cameras at the Khureji Khas anti-CAA protest site.

According to reports, a protest site at Khureji Khas against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was cleared by the Delhi police on 26 February 2020.

Multiple verified Twitter handles also shared the video then.

It is therefore clear that the video of the police allegedly breaking CCTV cameras is related to the anti-CAA protests last year in Delhi and not to the farmers’ agitation on this Republic Day.
