Fact check: This large pile of cash was not found in the house of a Bengali BJP leader

False allegations circulated on social media that a stack of currencies had been discovered from a BJP leader’s home in Bengal.

According to a rumor on social media, a stack of cash was found in a BJP leader’s house in Bengal.

This is the election season in West Bengal, and the internet is full of demands and counter-demands on various political parties.

More recently, a picture of a stack of currencies has been circulating on social media with the claim that the money was recovered from the home of a BJP leader in Bengal. Some police officers are also seen addressing a press conference.

Several Facebook and Twitter users shared the photo with a sarcastic caption in Hindi that translated into: ‘Money recovered from the home of a BJP leader in Bengal. He must have been trying to help the poor. ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the viral picture is from November 2019 when the police in Telangana arrested a fake currency rack and five men from the Khammam district. Counterfeit notes worth more than 6 million were seized. There is no recent report on cash recovery from any BJP leader’s home in Bengal.

The incident

Using reverse image search, we found that the viral picture was published in November 2019 on various news sites like “Telangana Today” and “The Times Of India”.

The same incident, with similar photos of police officers and the stack of notes, was also reported by The Financial Express and tweeted around the same time by the news agency ANI.

According to these reports, the police in Telangana have arrested five men who used to drive a fake money rocket. Police also seized 320 bundles of counterfeit notes worth Rs 6.4 million.

The picture also went viral last year with the false claim that the notes were found in the car of an RSS worker in Gujarat. “Aaj Tak” has removed the incorrect information that can be read here.
