Fact check: Raj Babbar’s old statement about Naxalites related to recent attack in Bijapur

A snapshot of a newspaper clipping in Hindi spread on social media with the allegation that Raj Babbar, Congress leader, called them revolutionaries after the recent Bijapur attack by Naxalites. A total of 22 CRPF jawans were tortured on April 3 in the horrific Naxal ambush in Chhattisgarh.

Several Facebook users posted the screenshot of the news item, the caption of which was translated: “Raj Babbar said Naxalites bring a revolution”.

Some Facebook users posted it with a caption in Hindi, saying: ’22 security personnel were tortured in a fight with Naxals in Bijapur in Chhattisgarh. But Raj Babbar says Naxals is bringing revolution. Should Raj Babbar get certainty after this remark? ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that it was an old statement by Babbar and was not given in the context of the Bijapur incident.

The archived versions of the Facebook posts are saved here, here and here.

What AFWA found

Using keyword search we found a few news reports about this controversial statement by Babbar on November 4, 2018.

According to these reports, Congress Rajya Sabha MP addressed a press conference in Raipur in Chhattisgarh. Commenting on the Naxal activities in the state, he said that the ‘revolution’ undertaken by them should be resolved through dialogue.

Babbar further said, ‘People whose rights have been taken away, who are in misery and who are not worthy of their rights are laying down their lives to regain their rights. However, the use of weapons by any party will not lead to a solution. A solution will only emerge by addressing their issues and talking to them. ‘

The video of Babbar’s media conference was tweeted by the news agency ANI.

We could not find any credible news report saying that Congress leader called Naxalites ‘revolutionaries’ after the attack on Bijapur. In a tweet, he rather condemned the attack, calling “Naxalism” an enemy of internal security. He also comforted the families of the martyrs.

Therefore, it is clear that an old statement from Babbar on Naxals was linked to the recent attack in Chhattisgarh.
