Fact check: Photo of man injured in violence in Mewat turned into atrocities against Hindus in Bengal

Various Twitter users who posted picture with the caption, “The media can show the news of the seven crosses on the beach, but there are no reports of atrocities against Hindus taking place in Bengal. Because their secularism will be in danger.rsh #StandWithBengalHindus ”.

Who is the injured man?

Using reverse search, we found that the viral image has been shared on social media since May 2020, along with the photo of another injured person. Several right-wingers Twitter handles and websites used the photos to report on common clashes last year in Haryana’s Mewat district.

Some sites also used a screenshot of a newspaper “Navbharat Times” to cut the incident. According to these sites, it was the aftermath of common clashes that erupted in Punhana, Mewat, in the first half of May 2020. The man seen in the viral photo is Kapil, who was injured along with another man when a mob attacked them. stones.

For further clarification, we contacted Monu Prajapat, the local reporter of “Navbharat Times”, who discussed the incident. He confirmed that the photo was taken during joint tension in Punhana in May 2020.

With the help of Prajapat we reach out to the victim who saw the man in the viral picture. The person named Kapil Goyal confirmed to us by telephone that it was indeed he who was seriously injured in the incident, along with another man named Manish.

‘There was a few days of tension in the area due to common clashes. We were riding a bicycle when suddenly a group of people pelted us with stones. “My skull was broken and I was admitted to hospital for a month and a half,” said Kapil. He also sent us a photo of stitches on his head while he was being treated in the hospital.

According to Kapil, an FIR was also lodged at the local police station.

Several incidents of common violence have been reported from Bengal in recent years. But the viral picture has nothing to do with Bengal, and it was taken during common violence in Punhana in Haryana last year.
