Fact Check-Old edited photo of Jane Fonda and John Kerry during a war against the war reappears

Social media users share a photo claiming she shows actress Jane Fonda with politician John Kerry during a war against the war. This photo was digitally altered over 17 years ago.

The text on the photo reads: “Actress and anti-war activist Jane Fonda talks to a crowd of Vietnamese veterans while activist and former Vietnamese veterinarian John Kerry (LEFT) listens and prepares to talk next about the war in Vietnam (AP Photo ). ”

The photo in the claim has been exposed several times since its appearance in 2004. Examples can be seen here, here and here.

Kerry was the Democratic nominee for president in 2004, when he narrowly lost to Republican President George W. Bush (here). President Joe Biden has named Kerry as a special climate envoy in his administration, and he is likely responsible for reviving the farce (here).

Although an Associated Press credit is listed in the description of the photo, it is not an AP photo. The photo in the claims was processed to place two separate photos of Kerry and Fonda next to each other.

The original photo of Kerry was taken here on June 13, 1970 by photographer Ken Light. The venue is Mineola, New York, and the description reads: “John Kerry is preparing to speak at the Register for Peace Rally in 1970.”

A photo of Fonda visible here was added to Kerry to create the image in the claim.

Fonda’s photo was taken in August 1972 by photographer Owen Franken in Miami Beach, Florida. The description of the photo reads: “Jane Fonda protests both the Vietnam War and President Nixon during a demonstration near the Republican National Convention in 1972.”
