Reuters fact check. REUTERS

A photo of a letter allegedly left by former President Donald Trump for new President Joe Biden has been shared online thousands of times. The letter in the photo reads: “Joe, you know I won.” Although Trump did leave a letter to Biden, there are signs that the apparent letter is a hoax.

Thousands of Facebook users have shared the image (here, here and here) and some have commented that they believe it is genuine, such as: “So this is the letter” and “Love President Trump. Always say the truth !! ”

Trump did participate in the presidential tradition of leaving a letter for the successor, but the contents were not disclosed with the publication of this article. On January 20, the day of his inauguration, President Biden told White House reporters, “The president wrote a very generous letter,” but “because it was private, I will not talk about it until I speak to him.” . . ”(Here)

There are also signs that the letter was created using image editing software. The presidential seal on the forged letter does not match previous examples sent from Trump’s White House. Letters from Trump to Kim Jong Un in North Korea in 2018 (here) and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in 2019 (here) had a golden crown at the top of the letter, while this fake has a colored seal that matches a Wikipedia search result for ‘Seal of the President of the United States (here).

This fake letter also has an address at the bottom, unlike previous letters from the former president, as noted by Fact Checkers Lead Stories (here).

VERDICT

Untrue. This letter has numerous stylistic differences compared to previous letters sent from Trump’s White House. The former president did leave a letter to Biden, but it has not been announced at the time of publication.
