Fact check image of Myanmar landslide incorrectly labeled as aftermath

A black-and-white image shared on social media showing corpses under an open structure is described as protesters killed in Myanmar in recent days. However, the picture is not related to the ongoing protests and rather shows the victims of a collapse of the jade mine in the country in July 2020.

Many of the posts sharing this particular image have been noticed by social media users acknowledging that the photo was incorrectly tagged. An example of the graphic image can be seen here.

The same photo appears in color in a news release about the landslide from 3 July 2020 (here contains graphic images) and a similar image appears in a report from different news publications dated 6 July 2020 (here). Several Facebook users also shared the photo in July 2020, while the open-side structure with metal beams in the photo can be seen in a shutter image here.

Reuters reported here on the deaths at the jade mine. More than 170 people, many of them migrants working in the Jade-rich Hpakant area in the state of Kachin, have died after mining debris collapsed into a lake.

The ill-marked image was shared amid bloody pro-democracy protests that have taken place since a military coup on February 1 sparked mass demonstrations nationwide (here).

VERDICT

Untrue. The black and white image used in the reports does not show the victims of continued pro-democracy protests in Myanmar.
