Fact check: Five false allegations Trump made in his first speech since getting Covid-19

Trump said the coronavirus was disappearing, a little over a week after announcing he had tested positive for the virus.

Facts first: The president has a long history of falsely downplaying the threat of the virus in public. Recent data suggests that the coronavirus is far from disappearing in the US and that the pandemic is actually increasing.

Praying about Hydrofracking

Trump had earlier accused Biden of accusing his position on hydrofracking, a drilling method used to extract natural gas and oil.

“They went through a period of years, no fracturing, no fracturing, no fracturing,” Trump said. “Suddenly he gets the nomination, he says there will be hydrofracking.”

Facts first: Trump’s characterization is misleading. Biden’s written plan never contained a complete ban on hydraulic fracturing. However, there is at least one basis for Trump’s assertion: During the Democratic primary, Biden sometimes suggested that he propose getting rid of all the hydraulic fractures, which create confusion about his attitude. He has since explicitly stated he does not support a nationwide ban on hydrofracking (though in part because he does not believe such a ban would succeed).

Prayers and protesters

Trump has repeatedly claimed that Biden referred to looters and rioters as peaceful protesters. He did so again on Saturday while talking about so-called ‘left-wing fanatics’ who looted and destroyed churches and buildings.

Facts first: This is false. Pray it correctly noticed that many protesters were peaceful; he did not argue that the violent protesters were peaceful. He rather violence repeatedly exposed, rioting and looting.

Existing conditions

In Wednesday’s debate, Vice President Mike Pence insisted that the Trump administration has plans to protect Americans with existing conditions. Trump made the same statement on Saturday, saying, “We will always take care of existing conditions.”
Facts first: We do not usually look at promises, but they are false. The Trump administration and the Republican Republic have accounts repeatedly presented and filed lawsuits that would weaken Obamacare’s protection for people with pre-existing conditions. Trump currently supports a Republican lawsuit who is trying to annul all of Obamacare, and he has no plans to protect people with existing conditions if the lawsuit succeeds.

Trump and Black Americans

“The fact is that since Abraham Lincoln, I have done more for the Black community than any president,” Trump said. “No one can dispute that. It’s true.”

Facts first: Although we give Trump a lot of room to express opinions, it is very questionable, even if he only compares himself to previous presidents and excludes other black heroes.

President Lyndon B. Johnson, for example, signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, monumental bills whose impact dwarfs the impact of any legislation Trump has signed.

It is also noteworthy that black people do not agree with Trump’s self-esteem at all. Trump has had an ongoing abyss with black citizens – only 4% in a recent Quinnipiac University poll, for example versus 93% disapprove.
