Fact check: False magazine ‘National Geographic’ with farmers’ protest goes viral

An image that looks like a magazine cover with ‘National Geographic’ on it, along with a photo of a man wearing a turban, went viral with the claim that the cover story of the magazine contained the ongoing farmers’ protests in Delhi . border. India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the cover image is actually an imaginary work of art by an Instagram user.

The National Geographic has so far not shown the agitation of the farmers as a cover story in any of its issues.

Has National Geographic magazine dedicated its ‘Winter 2020’ issue to agitating farmers?

An image that looks like a magazine cover with ‘National Geographic’ on it, along with a photo of a man wearing a turban, went viral with the claim that the cover story of the magazine contained the ongoing farmers’ protests in Delhi . border.

Several Facebook and Twitter users shared the image and thanked National Geographic for the gesture.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the cover image is actually an imaginary work of art by an Instagram user. The National Geographic has so far not shown the agitation of the farmers as a cover story in any of its issues.

The truth

We took a close look at National Geographic website, but could not find any recent article or cover story emphasizing the farmers’ agitation in India.

The recent issues of the magazine rather contain issues that are not even remotely related to the peasant protests.

If we look closely, we found ‘@anoopreet’ written at the bottom right of the picture. By searching on social media, we found the user’s Instagram account.

On January 3, 2021, she posted this ‘imaginary cover’ and clearly stated that it was her artistic creation, based on a photo clicked by PTI photojournalist Ravi Choudhary.

Ravi Choudhary posted this photo on Instagram on December 27, 2020, with the caption, “The Green Revolutionaries of 2020!”

Therefore, it is confirmed that the viral image spread with the claim that it is the cover of National Geographic magazine is actually a work of art of an Instagram user. The protest has so far not been featured on the cover of any of the issues.
