Fact check: Digitally edited image of Melania Trump holding up Trump t-shirt

Social media users are circulating an image showing former first lady Melania Trump holding up a t-shirt with Donald Trump’s face and saying, “I’m coming back.” The t-shirt is for sale online, but the photo of Melania is edited: the same picture with the same background, hands and the same size and color, has been taken care of to show different faces along with other designs in the past.

Reuters fact check. REUTERS

The posts (here and here) it appears to show Melania Trump in a room with a brown ceiling with wood panels, a bookshelf and a wooden bench, with a black t-shirt up with a photo of former President Trump wearing sunglasses with ‘ 2020 ‘or’ 2021 ‘. written on it. Below the image of Trump on the t-shirt are the words “I’m coming back” and what appears to be Trump’s signature. The sunglasses and the phrase probably refer to Arnold Schwarzenegger and the movie “The Terminator” (here., Here, here).

In Donald Trump’s last speech as president, he said, “We will be back in some form” (here, here).

Photos with the same background (light, carpet, floor, table, chair, bookshelf, ceiling), the same hands (position, color, folds, nails) and the same size and color t-shirt have spread many times in the past, but with different designs and the faces of different public figures on the t-shirt. Some examples include Depeche Mode and David Gahan (here), The Beatles and Paul McCartney (here), James Bond and Daniel Craig (here), Apollo 50 and Buzz Aldrin (here), The Big Bang Theory and Jim Parsons (here) and Away with the Wind and Leslie Howard (here).

Reuters could not determine the original source of the image or from which the image of Melania Trump was taken.

The hands in the social media post do not look like Melania Trump’s hands (visible on Reuters photos here, here and here).

The same Trump “Terminator” t-shirt pictured in the reports is on sale at online stores (here, here, here).
