Facebook is reviewing pages to remove ‘Likes’ and streamline the user interface

Facebook is out today with a major Facebook Pages update that includes the removal of “Likes”, a brand new layout for the UI, a dedicated news feed, simpler navigation, refreshed controls for partial or full privileges, new insights as well as security and integrity features.

Facebook announced the new Pages experience in a blog post, saying the revamp begins today. Here are the new key features / changes:

  • Redesign layout it’s simpler and more intuitive
  • Dedicated news feed to discover and connect conversations, follow trends, interact with peers and connect with fans
  • Easy navigation between personal profile and Pages
  • Task-Based Admin Controls Updated gives trusted Page administrators full control or partial access
  • Useful insights and more relevant notices
  • Security and integrity features to detect spam content and impersonator accounts

The new user interface is designed to make it easier to switch between personal profiles and public pages. Facebook says it is also ‘cleaner and more streamlined’ than before. It focuses on bios, postings and important information.

Here’s how Facebook describes the dedicated news feed for pages:

We bring the power of News Feed to Pages for the first time. Now Pages can discover and join conversations, follow trends, interact with peers, and engage with fans. The dedicated news feed will also introduce new links – other public figures, pages, groups and trending content that a page or public figure cares about.

To make page conversations more visible to a wider audience and to be seen more frequently in their followers’ news feed, comments from public figures will be stamped at the top of the comments section. People will also be able to follow pages directly from comments and recommendations.

Another focal point is “richer interactive conversations”, so reloading pages includes a new Q&A format.

No more likes

A major change with this update is the removal of Preferences for Pages. Facebook moved it to Followers:

We remove Likes and focus on Followers to simplify the way people connect with their favorite Pages. Unlike ‘Likes’, the followers of a page represent the people who can receive updates from Pages, which helps to give public figures a stronger indication of their fan base.

Admins are likely to be pleased to see enhanced management features:

We’ve added new page management features – such as the ability to more clearly allocate and manage access permissions for administrators based on specific tasks. For example, you will now be able to provide different levels of access to manage specific tasks, including insights, advertising, content, and community activity and messages. It will also ensure account security and integrity.

Finally, Facebook says it uses the verified badge to keep the community safe and improve the detection of blocked content:

We want Facebook to be a safe place to connect with fans, so we’ve improved our ability to track activities on our platform, including hate speech, violent, sexual or spam content, and imitation. We continue to extend the visibility of a verified badge to make it easier to identify posts and comments from authentic pages and profiles. A verified page’s comment on another page’s public post may appear higher in the comments section and be visible in the news feed.

The new Pages start rolling out today, but Facebook says it will appear to all users in the coming months.
