Twitter said it had closed President Donald Trump’s account for 12 hours and warned for the first time that it could suspend him permanently.
The temporary lock reflects Trump’s violation of Twitter rules, the company said.
“We have removed the deletion of three @RealDonaldTrump tweets posted earlier today for repeated and serious violations of our civil integrity policies,” Twitter said. “This means that the @realDonaldTrump account will be closed for 12 hours after deleting these tweets. If the tweets are not deleted, the account will remain closed.”
Twitter added that “future violations … will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account.”
“We have reviewed two policy violations against President Trump’s page, which will result in a 24-hour feature block, which means he will lose the ability to post on the platform during that time,” Facebook said in a tweet .
Facebook spokesman Andy Stone did not immediately respond to questions about whether Trump could face a permanent suspension if he continues to violate Facebook policy.
The announcement indicates a huge increase by both social media companies against Trump’s account and responds to calls from civil rights groups to ban Trump from the platforms.
