Eyewitness Newsmakers: Mayor Eric Garcetti discusses the progress of vaccines and reopens restaurants in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Mayor Eric Garcetti is sending out a message that hope is at stake in various areas. About Eyewitness Newsmakers, he said relief is on the way for people struggling in the pandemic.

Congress will triple tenants and tenants homeowners and send $ 250 million, which could also include rent. The mayor said millions more rent relief is on the way if it is all added up.

“We could see as much as $ 300 or $ 400 million that we handed out in December. So it’s important as a tenant to make sure your tenants know they’re signing up.”

If the COVID-19 rate continues to decline, Los Angeles could move out of the most restrictive press level in about a week, leading to a partial reopening of businesses such as restaurants.

“We are on the verge of the red level, which will allow indoor dining if the province authorizes it at 25%,” Garcetti said. “And if this trend continues, we could expand beyond 25%.”

The mayor thinks schools could open by April. He is willing to help on Sundays with the opening of Dodger Stadium to speed up the vaccinations of teachers. He offers his help negotiating the reopening, if asked.

“I think it’s such a reflection of how bad this nation has gone that our children have been left behind. And that we have card rooms here that have been opened in front of classrooms. It’s inexcusable.”

Many viewers have asked how homeless camps are allowed to continue to grow. The CDC recommends that unprotected people be moved into the pandemic.

Mayor Garcetti says the one-shot vaccine Johnson & Johnson will be good for this population.

“Let’s get the vaccines for them. Let’s then have an honest conversation to make sure we get the cleanups in a humane way, with services and showers and references to housing and really helping people get off the streets. “It looks like zombie land in too many places.”

Viewers asked the mayor if he regretted changing his approval to George Gascón for the Los Angeles District Attorney over the current Jackie Lacey.

He said he stood by his support for Gascón to ‘turn another page’, but he may not agree with all his instructions.

“If I support people, it does not mean that I agree 100% with what they do. I follow these things closely. Where I do not agree, I will not be ashamed to express myself.”

The mayor added that it is very important to make sure that we not only have the support of victims, but also to turn a new page to not let people “repeat, repeat, repeat and forever on our own penny” do not lock away. ”
