So many lies led to the riot in Washington last Wednesday. Now new lies are being offered on the right web to defend the indefensible. And President Trump’s cheering section is desperately trying to bury the unrest in the memory hole.
If we’re talking about memories, let’s go back in time. A week ago, our author Timothy Snyder, on our trusted sources, warned ‘On Tyranny’ that ‘we are now moving dangerously into the realm of a big lie’. He said: “The idea that Mr Biden did not win the election is a big lie. It’s a big lie because you have to believe all kinds of evidence to believe in it. It’s a big lie because you’re in it. a big lie to believe in. conspiracy to believe it. And it’s a big lie because if you believe it it requires you to act radically so it’s one way we’re really moved forward towards authoritarianism and away of democracy. It is now coming to a climax. “
Wednesday was the highlight – maybe. Every day, more evidence of the attack comes to light. Much more reporting is needed. I agree with Yashar Ali, who said on Sunday night: “I feel like we only know 5% of the insurgency story.”
But we must also look ahead. As Jake Tapper said on Sunday at the end of ‘SOTU’: ‘Will there be consequences? Will Kevin McCarthy remain the Republican leader of the House? ‘ Will Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley “just be allowed to pick up their committee duties and try to move on? And what about the president of the United States? Will he be allowed to fly out of Washington on January 19 to spend his days? On the golf course usury, more lies spread through the TV networks that were also part of this betrayal? ‘
Tapper concluded: “What happens to us? What happens to our country if we continue to pretend that leaders who played a role in this coup attempt will ultimately go well in this terrorist attack without any consequences? Will January 6, 2021 be remembered? if only the beginning? ‘
Was Wednesday the highlight, or just the beginning?
This is what brings me back to Snyder, whose book shot up to # 1 on Amazon again. He wrote the cover story for next week’s New York Times Magazine, and it’s already online. The story is another warning, and it inspired the headline of tonight’s newsletter.
“The lie survives the liar,” Snyder wrote. “The idea that Germany lost World War I in 1918 due to a Jewish ‘backlash’ was 15 years old when Hitler came to power. How will Trump’s myth of victim function in American life over 15 years? And to whose benefit? ‘
He concluded that “America will not survive the great lie just because a liar is separated from power. It will need a thorough re-pluralization of the media and a commitment to facts as a public good. ” Read more …
Trump will be charged unless …
At the moment, CNN.com’s headline says that the House “will move quickly on indictment if the pressure on the 25th amendment fails.”
“This will be the first time a U.S. president has been charged for a second time,” Wolf Blitzer said on Sunday night.
→ Big picture: More than 104 hours have passed since Trump incited a riot at the Capitol. And he’s still in the office.
