Ohio Quarter Commitment in 2022 Quinn Ewers and his Southlake Carroll teammates from Southlake (Texas) lost one win besides their season goal for 2020-21 and lost Saturday night with Austin (Texas) Westlake in the Texas 6A Championship game 52-34. It was the second live championship for Westlake.
The evening started in a spectacular way when Ewers were 4 of 5 for 58 yards and then 3 of 3 on their next ride, including a pass of 49 yards as Southlake Carroll led 14-7. Ewers threw for 130 yards at that point.
However, each time Southlake Carroll passed, Westlake also scored. Westlake then led 21-14 early in the second quarter. Ewers and his teammates returned at 21 to level the game before Westlake were 1:12 left and took a 28-21 lead in the locker room.
Westlake, who scored on all four of their first-half possessions, drove 75 yards to open the second half and passed on a 4-yard run to make it 35-21. Ewers was then hit when he threw and was intercepted for the second time. Westlake followed with another attempt to take a 42-21 lead.
Finally late in the third quarter, Southlake kept Carroll Westlake out of the end zone with a possession that forced a field try that was good for a 45-21 lead for Westlake. Westlake added another power play in the fourth quarter for a 52-21 lead before Ewers linked a ten-yard pass to reduce the lead to 52-27 by 4:21.
After Southlake Carroll got a kick from the side, he scored again, this time on a short run to make the score 52-34 for Westlake with 3:14 left in the game. But that ended the score for the night and Westlake went home with a 52-34 victory and another 6A state championship.
Ewers completed 23 of 39 passes for 352 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Westlake was led by their talented class of 2022 Cade Klubnik who completed 18 of 20 passes for 220 yards and an attack, while also rushing to 97 yards and two touchdowns. Klubnik has more than two dozen scholarship offers, including Texas, Auburn, TCU, North Carolina, LSU and Georgia.
