Epic Games secures $ 1 billion in funding, and Sony invests another $ 200 million

Nintendo’s partner Sony has just raised another $ 200 million in the Fortnite creator of Epic Games.

Epic’s $ 1 billion funding from Sony and several other companies will enable it to support future growth opportunities. This now puts the company’s equity valuation at $ 28.7 billion.

According to Epic’s latest PR, Sony’s investment strengthens the shared mission to advance technology and more:

‘[The investment] builds on the close relationship between the two businesses and strengthens their shared mission to promote the latest technology, entertainment and socially connected online services. ‘

Sammy Barker, editor of Push Square, emphasizes this not an investment in the PlayStation division.

Sony’s first minority stake in Epic actually took place last year when it dropped $ 250 million on the video game juggernaut. At the time, it was clear that it would not affect Epic’s other titles on other platforms, such as the Switch.

In addition to games, Sony uses Epic’s Unreal Engine for a variety of products, including music videos, movies, television shows, and even virtual reality experiences.

Here’s exactly what Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney had to say about reaching the $ 1 billion funding point:

‘We are grateful for our new and existing investors who support our vision for Epic and the Metaverse. Their investment will help accelerate our work around building social experiences in Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys, while empowering game developers and developers with Unreal Engine, Epic Online Services and the Epic Games Store. ‘

And this was the remark of Sony’s chairman, president and CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida:

“Epic continues to deliver revolutionary experiences through its range of cutting-edge technologies that support creators in gambling and the digital entertainment industry. We are excited to strengthen our collaboration to bring new entertainment experiences to people around the world. I strongly believe that it is in line with our goal to fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology. ”

On a related and much lighter note, Horizon Zero Dawn protagonist Aloy (who also happens to be a PlayStation IP) will join Fortnite.
