Epic Games buys mall to move to new headquarters • Eurogamer.net

When most people go to the stores, they pick up a few things. When Epic Games goes shopping, he buys his local mall.

Epic agreed this week to purchase the Cary Towne Center, a 980,000-square-foot site just off the current home in Cary, North Carolina.

The large complex will be Epic’s new home campus, opening in 2024 following a three-year plan to renovate and rebuild the area. I’m hoping for some statues of Fortnite Fave Fishstick.

While Epic will own the site, some of it may still be handed over for use by the local community, the company said.

Epic moved to Cary in 1999 after initially being established as Potomac Computer Systems in Tim Sweeney’s parental home in Potomac, Maryland. The company now says it has 50 offices worldwide, which run the hugely successful Fortnite, develop Unreal Engine and operate the Epic Games Store.

If you want to see what the largely empty Cary Towne Center currently looks like, there are many photos on the oddly interesting r / deadmalls reddit.
