Texas supermarket workers are appealing to their employer to thoroughly investigate their latest mask policy.
Hundreds of employees of HEB, a supermarket chain in San Antonio, are appealing to the company to reverse its recent decision to simply recommend that customers wear masks, rather than absolutely require it. However, the grocery stores still need masks from employees and vendors.
HEB announced its new policy last week after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed an executive order on March 10 to revoke the mandate for the entire mask.

In the days that followed, HEB employees who disagreed with the company’s new policy organized an event on Facebook during which they planned to call corporate leaders and demand that they reinstate the requirement.
Following Governor Abbott’s decision to revoke the Texas mandate nationwide, HEB confirmed that it encourages the continued use of masks for customers, but does not need them.

“The recommendation of HEB’s mask instead of a requirement will harm workers, buyers and communities,” reads a page for the Facebook event, which was planned earlier this week. “As one of the leading grocery chains in the state and country, HEB has a moral responsibility to serve their communities and apply CDC guidelines within their walls.”
The group also included phone numbers for the chain’s headquarters in San Antonio, as well as a reference template for fans to use that outlines what they should say during the call.

Following Tuesday’s efforts, the group’s plans celebrated the coverage by local media and promised to ” continue our fight for better working conditions and a safe experience for our buyer ”.
A representative for the group was not immediately available to share the details of the corporate response, if any, to their calls. HEB also did not make any changes to its most recent mask policy as of Wednesday morning.

Following Governor Abbott’s decision to revoke the state’s broad mandate of Texas, several Texas supermarket chains have repeated or adjusted their current policies. Kroger and Aldi, for example, said they would maintain their mask requirements for both customers and employees, while Albertsons and HEB both stated that masks would only be encouraged, although not necessary.
The company also confirmed on Twitter that it would not conduct a “confrontation” with those who denied the request, although the statement was not good for some on Twitter.
