Emirates is one of the few airlines still flying the Airbus A380, a dying aircraft race that will soon no longer be manufactured by Airbus. But the world’s largest operator of the A380 does not give up the largest passenger aircraft in the world.

The mega-airline in the Middle East on Tuesday unveiled a massive refurbishment of its flagship aircraft that sees each cabin receive improvements and even the addition of a premium economy class, a first for the 35-year-old Emirates. The first A380 completed with the upgrades, has already arrived in Dubai with more to be delivered in the next two years.

Emirates is known for luxury aircraft, as Rachel Hosie of Insider found during the tour of the A380 airline at the Dubai Air Show in 2019, and saves no cost, especially not in its premium cabins. In the first class on the A380, for example, passengers not only sit in private suites with gold, but have access to the main bathroom with its own shower.

And while other airlines threw away the A380 during the pandemic due to the high operating costs, Emirates still has nothing but praise for the aircraft. “It’s palace-like,” CEO Sir Tim Clark told Business Insider David Slotnick in an interview in July. “And people absolutely love it. They’re still going out of their way to get on the 380s.”
