If you were surprised to see that ‘Emily in Paris’ garnered two Golden Globe nominations on Wednesday, while ‘I May Destroy You’ was strung, you are not alone.

Deborah Copaken, a Netflix series writer on a young American making her way into the City of Light, says she was shocked – and angry – too.

“Now, am I excited that ‘Emily in Paris’ has been nominated?” Copaken writes in an article in the Guardian, which was published on Wednesday. “Of course. I’ve never been so close to seeing a Golden Globe statue up close, let alone being nominated for one. But the excitement is now sadly tempered by my anger over (Michaela) Coel’s That ‘I May You Destroy You’ did not get a single Golden Globe nod is not only wrong, but what’s wrong with everything.

Coel has written, co-directed and starred in the HBO series, which explores the trauma of sexual assault. Although Copaken considered the show a “work of pure genius”, it did not receive any Golden Globe nominations.

” I May Destroy You ‘was not just my favorite show of 2020,’ ‘Copaken wrote. “It’s my favorite show ever. It takes the complicated issue of rape – I’m a survivor of sexual assault myself – and gives it heart, humor, pathos and a story so well put together that I’m twice it. had to watch, just to understand how Coel did it. ‘

‘Emily in Paris’ was nominated for Best Comedy or Musical, and Lily Collins, who stars as the emerging influencer Emily Cooper, received a nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

Although Copaken is pleased that ‘Emily in Paris’ has been nominated, she wrote that the program does have its shortcomings.

“Did I take the criticism of the program personally?” she wrote. ‘Natural. Who would not? But neither. ‘ Emily in Paris’ aired a few months after I spent June and July with my children through racial justice through the streets of New York. I could definitely see how a a show about a white American selling luxury whiteness, in a pre-pandemic in Paris released from its vibrant African and Muslim communities, could go bad. ‘

According to Copaken, the absence of ‘I May Destroy You’ from the nomination list speaks to bigger racial issues, with the author referring to a 2017 report by the non-profit Color of Change, which found that 91% of the frontrunners are white and 80% men.

“Yes, we need art that reflects all our colors, not just some,” she wrote. “But we also have to give awards to programs (and music and movies and plays and musicals) that deserve it, regardless of the color of their creators. Is ‘Hamilton’ great because Lin-Manuel Miranda is Puerto Rican? No. It’s great, because it’s right. In the same way, someone who can see ‘I May Destroy You’ and not call it a brilliant work of art or Michaela Coel a genius can have my ability to understand how these decisions are made. ‘
