Elsa Peretti, the famous Tiffany & Co. designer, has passed away

Elsa Peretti, the well-known jewelry designer of Tiffany & Co., has died, according to a statement from the company. She was 80 years old.

Peretti died in Spain on Thursday, March 18, according to a statement from her foundation.

“A master craftsman, Elsa was responsible for a revolution in the world of jewelry design. Her collection of organic, sensual forms has inspired generations,” the statement read. “Elsa’s relationship with style and the natural world was deeply personal and reflected strongly in her creations. Over the past 50 years, Elsa has created some of the most innovative jewelry and design objects in the world.”

According to Vogue, Peretti was born in Florence, Italy. By 1964, she began modeling in Spain and later moved to New York and met fashion designer Halston, with whom she collaborated and who introduced her to Tiffany & Co. ‘s leadership. She joined the company in 1974. Vogue reports that Peretti’s designs eventually account for about 10% of Tiffany & Co.’s. make up sales.

Peretti was also the president and founder of the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation, which according to the company supports projects related to human rights, environmental conservation and the preservation of arts and culture.
