By dyeing my hair in cinnamon gold, I felt like a new person
Regina Harris, the star of this week’s episode of Hair Me Out, was on a lifelong journey with her natural hair. When she grows up, she will get routine or relaxing treatments; in the summer her mother would give her braids as a protective style. Now, as a woman in her twenties, comes into her own, Harris wants to be the author of her own hair story, which is why she decides to color her natural curls for the first time. For her transformation, Harris visits Spoke & Weal Salon in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, where she checks in with Alexandra Hiers, color and natural hair specialist, and asks for her interpretation of ‘cinnamon hair color’. “I want to get cinnamon-colored hair, mostly because I saw it in August and wanted to do it,” Harris says before her appointment, noting that the choice is not as simple as it may seem. “I’m facing the stigma of ‘You can’t color your hair a certain color with your skin tone,'” Harris continues, “but as I get older, I really get into my own womanhood and do not. “I do not really care – I’m going to do what I want with my hair. Today, of course, I’m a little nervous, but I know Alex’s going to flee; she’s doing amazing work, so I’m very excited. “Here is more than capable of embarking on this transformation. “I specialize in color and work with all hair textures, but my favorite is curly hair,” she explains of her natural hair expertise, adding that she has a clear vision for Harris’ color. ‘Today, with Regina, we are going to make her natural textured hair golden cinnamon brown. We want to make sure we keep her complexion so she does not look too hot or sore. We want her to leave like a goddess. ‘To ensure that the bleaching solution does not stretch or damage Harris’ coils, Hiers starts by saturating her hair with a heat-protective agent (she uses Aveda Heat Relief). Then she paints the colored dye from roots to dots and lets it be processed under a cap for about 45 minutes. Once the cinnamon color has set, hit here shampoo, condition, blow dry the hair with a hair dryer and then press it smooth with a flat iron for the big reveal. Finally, Harris is ecstatic with her new look. “I feel so good – I’m so happy with the color,” she says. ‘It matches my skin color so perfectly; I feel like a new woman, who is she? I just feel like that next year, I’m going to feel like I’m a new person, and now I can see that I’m a new person. I feel like I’m really going into that womanhood, so it’s nice to see it come true.
