Elizabeth Olsen had to fight to get a comically-accurate costume in WandaVision

Elizabeth Olsen reveals how she insisted that they completely embrace the original costume of Scarlet Witch so that she could wear it on WandaVision.

Elizabeth Olsen says she had to fight to wear Scarlet Witch’s cartoon-like costume WandaVision. The actress officially pulls the character’s classic appearance from the comics in an upcoming episode of the Marvel Studios series for Disney +.

Debuted in 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultron, the MCU’s version of Scarlet Witch differed significantly from her printed counterpart. To begin with, they had to change her origins so that she is technically not a mutant due to previous complications with character rights, although that may change now that the X-Men are back at Marvel Studios. Aside from that, the franchise has yet to fully explore her power range, mainly due to the lack of full focus on the character with interest primarily in the original Avengers. But after the Infinity Saga, that’s all going to change as she takes a more prominent position in the MCU, first with her continued appearance in WandaVision.

The MCU’s half-baked attack on Wanda so far has also affected her appearance on screen. While the franchise is known for mostly sticking to how its characters look in print, Scarlet Witch’s costume has been pulled off in the franchise. When the chance came to fully dress her red headpiece and hood ensemble WandaVision, Olsen said she insists on going all the way in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

“I was so excited! We had a Halloween episode and they were trying to figure out how big a wink for the character we were going to do, and it started with the classic Scarlet Witch costume. It was kind of a gypsy thing that had to wear a headband, and I fought for that too. I was like ‘No, we have to work hard … it’s like the biggest thing, if Paul does it, I do it.’

Scarlet Witch costumes

Scarlet Witch and Vision’s comically accurate costumes are teased WandaVision long before any official footage for the program was released. Not long after the project was announced, Marvel Studios released a piece of concept art for the project that shows the couple in an area of the suburbs, just as the first three installments of it looked like. But in the left-hand corner of the illustration, the shadow of the pair set out their cartoon-accurate appearance, with Scarlet Witch’s pointed headpiece prominent. Eventually, this was confirmed by a trailer featuring the scene that is expected to be part of the 2000 series episode of the series. For that, reference has already been made to the beautiful credits of the program.

It’s interesting that director Joss Whedon, when Olsen first signed up for the job, promised her that she would not be wearing the more challenging costume of Scarlet Witch in the comic strip. Chances are they’ll stay with her established appearance on screen, as her comically accurate appearance was only made possible by an upcoming Halloween-themed episode for WandaVision, it’s still something to look forward to. Maybe it’s also a sign that Marvel Studios is finally ready to make her the A + character she’s always been in print.
