Electronic Arts is engaged in the Kim Kardashian venture. At least that’s the case if Glu Mobile’s agreement to grab mobile games goes through. EA today announced its plans to acquire Glu in a $ 2.4 billion deal. The companies expect the acquisition to close in the second quarter of this year. This is EA’s second major acquisition in recent weeks, after the move to bring publisher Codemasters under its umbrella.
Glu is known for the aforementioned Kim Kardashian Hollywood game, as well as other mobile hits such as Tap Sports Baseball, Dine Dash Adventures and Disney Sorcerer’s Arena. As a mobile publisher, Glu specializes in larger budget mobile games, often with full 3D footage. But it also focuses on games that play for free and that last for years and that earn revenue from microtransactions. This is the business model that EA has repeatedly told investors that he wants to emphasize in the future.
“Our acquisition of Glu combines amazing teams and deeply engaging products to create a leader in mobile gaming with proven expertise in fast-growing genres,” EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement. “Mobile is still growing as the largest gaming platform in the world, and with the addition of Glu’s games and talent, we are doubling the size of our mobile business.”
Glu CEO Nick Early, in turn, is pleased with this exit for shareholders.
‘This transaction is the culmination of the tremendous work of the Glu team to deliver world-class interactive experiences for our players, while driving a business momentum that has led to strong financial and operational results. “This represents a great outcome for all our shareholders and other key ingredients,” said Earl. “As part of Electronic Arts, we will continue to take advantage of the opportunities ahead in the growing mobile gambling industry.”
