Electric Jeep Wrangler ‘Magneto’ is a clean dirt road machine

Jeep will make noise in Moab with a quiet SUV.

The Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept is a fully electric version of the venerable 4×4 that makes its debut on March 27 at the Jeep Safari Off-Road Race in Utah, Utah.

The Magneto is based on the Wrangler Rubicon, but its V6 engine has been replaced by an electric motor with the same 285 horsepower that joins the standard six-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive system.

The car is set to deliver its power in a similar way to the V6, to keep things familiar when negotiating difficult terrain, but can also deliver a torque of 273 lb-ft in an instant when the driver the accelerator floor.

The set-up is different from most purpose-built electric vehicles, which work without transmissions and drive the electric motors directly on the wheels, but have been used in electrical conversions of various classic cars.

The energy is drawn from four batteries with a combined storage capacity of 70 kilowatt hours installed on top of the car, under the vehicle where the fuel tank is usually and in the boot. The system can also be used to supply external electrical equipment on the premises.

Jeep did not announce plans to put the Magneto drivetrain into production, but will conduct engineering tests during the event, where it will also install the first of a network of charging stations working on solar power, which it will install at popular field destinations.

The model combines a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and electric motor to deliver 375 hp and 470 lb of torque and has a combined fuel consumption rating equal to 49 mpg in typical use. It can also be driven at 21 km in a fully electric mode.

Along with the futuristic Wrangler Magneto, Jeep also brings several other concepts to Moab, including the Jeepster Beach, which is a 1968 Jeepster commando with a modern Wrangler 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine set at 340 pk and 369 lb-ft of torque, 8-speed automatic transmission and 4: 1 transmission. The Beach also has a carpet-free sand-friendly interior to live up to its name.
